7th Grade Social Dance Program

7th Grade Social Dance program is a PMS tradition where middle school students have a chance to interact socially with one another and learn a variety of dance styles like Foxtrot, Swing, Disco, and Waltz, as well as some basic social etiquette.

The classes are taught by long-time instructor Don O'Connell and are chaperoned by parent volunteers. All 7th-grade residents of Piedmont are welcome. Please note that masks are required and COVID restrictions will be part of the program.

Required safety protocols for students:
Wearing of masks.
Masks to be worn properly throughout the session.
Regular hand sanitizer use. 
No handshaking will take place.

Wearing masks.
Masks to be worn properly throughout the session.
Regular use of hand sanitizer.
Chaperones must have been vaccinated. 

Required safety protocols for teaching staff:
All staff to show proof of being vaccinated.
Wearing masks.
Masks to be worn properly throughout the session.
Regular use of hand sanitizer.

The program consists of six classes held every 4-6 weeks on Thursday nights from 7:00-8:30 pm in the PMS multi-purpose room. Dates are:

October 7Dance Basics (Dressy attire)

November 18 Disco (Dressy attire)

December 16: Latin (Dressy attire)

January 13: Fifties (Costumes suggested)

February 17Swing City (Dressy attire)

March 3Country Western (Costumes suggested) 

Each class has a theme and students dress up for class. Details on attire and protocols will be sent before the first class. The curriculum focuses on the teaching of partner dances such as the Fox Trot, Swing and Cha Cha.  In these dances, partners stand face to face and are holding hands.  Approximately 80% of class time is spent with partners dancing.  We teach several line dances over the course of the program.  Approximately 20% of class time is spent doing line dances.
